Guizhou Province is situated in the southwest of China，which is called Qian or Gui for short. The language and customs are similar to those in Chongqing Municipality，Sichuan Province and Yunnan Province.As a name of a region，the character Guizhou dates back to the Song Dynasty. It is said that in 974 A. D. the aboriginal chief Pu Gui paid allegiance to the Song Dynasty and his territory was called Juzhou. In the local language，the pronunciation of Ju is close to that of Gui，so the command paper ofimperial court said Guizhou，a remote and savage place，which was the earliest documentation of Guizhou.In 1119 A.D.（the first year under the reign of Xuanhe in the Song Dynasty），the imperial court awarded the title of Guizhou Defense Official to Tian Yougong，the Fengning army official （Chengxuanshi，the aboriginal military chief of Zhisi state），marking the initial appearance of administrative divisions，but at that time Guizhou just had the land area around Guiyang. Until the early Yuan Dynasty，the imperial court named this region Guizhou.The east northern area under Guizhou jurisdiction belonged to Qianzhong County during the Qin Dynasty and Qianzhong Dao during the Tang Dynasty，so it was called Qian for short.
