　　在美國，凡是受過教育的人幾乎都讀過《麥加菲讀本》，美國媒體更稱其為“影響美國五代人的心靈讀本”。其主編者威廉·H.麥加菲，是美國著名的教育家。據(jù)估計，在不到一個世紀的時間里，這套書的銷量超過了1.2億冊。1961年以后，在西方每年銷量仍達到3萬冊以上?？梢哉f，沒有哪一套個人主編的教材能超過這套書的發(fā)行量！這套書英文原版共7冊，包括一冊啟蒙讀本和1-6級教材。由于啟蒙讀本和第一級篇幅都很少，我們出版時合編成一冊；其余2-6級則和英文原版相同。這套書的內(nèi)容由淺入深，從基本單詞、常用句型開始，延展到簡單的詩歌，再進階到中長篇的經(jīng)典著作。從難易程度來看，前三部分內(nèi)容單純美好，文字樸素簡潔，比較適合國內(nèi)中低年級小學生閱讀；后三部分的內(nèi)容相對繁復深奧，開始有側重性，有的筆法精密，描寫細膩；有的文風犀利，寓意深刻，比較適合高年級小學生和中學生閱讀。這套書的最大特色在于它所包含的內(nèi)容更貼近生活。它沒有童話的唯美和寓言的神奇，但其中的文章會讓小朋友們覺得事情就發(fā)生在身邊。而且，除了對真、善、美的頌揚，麥加菲也沒有回避生活中的艱難與困苦，但其宗旨絕非消極憤世，而是突出困境之下個人的堅守與成長。這樣的文章往往更容易引起心靈的共鳴，滋養(yǎng)心靈的成長，也將對小朋友的人生觀起到積極正面的推動作用，堪稱真正的“德育”教材。

作者簡介

　　威廉·H·麥加菲，美國著名教育家。1800年出生于賓夕法尼亞州，1826年畢業(yè)于華盛頓大學杰斐遜學院。在數(shù)十年教育生涯中，他曾擔任過邁阿密大學語言學教授，俄亥俄大學校長。自1845年開始任弗吉尼亞大學道德哲學教授。他還幫助組建了俄亥俄州公立學校體系。早在19世紀初期，麥加菲就意識到，應該給那些孤獨的墾荒者和歐洲移民的后代提供普遍的教育，于是他利用自己作為演講家與教育工作者的天賦，開始為孩子們編寫系列教材。這套教材共7冊，從學齡前至第6年級。他前后花費了20多年的時間才完成全套教材的編寫。這套教材面世后就被美國很多學校選為課本。在75年間銷量高達1.22億，直到今天仍以各種版本流行于西方，被美國《出版周刊》評為“人類出版史上第三大暢銷書”，對美國青年的心靈塑造與道德培養(yǎng)產(chǎn)生了史無前例的影響。
